Jesus Christ Superstar
This psychedelic mind-blowing treat and under appreciated rock opera stands head and shoulders above many in the genre. The original cast album recording from 1970, although known as the first musical to be created by Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice, included the musicianship of Ian Gillan (Deep Purple), Henry McCullough (Joe Cocker & WINGS!) and Murray Head (One Night in Bangkok). The music owes far more to these rock gods than the musical mediocrity we have come to associate with Lloyd-Webber and Rice. This is why the musical and film have been held in such high regards by the likes of Matt Berry and the late great Prince. To cap it all off, it’s directed by Norman Jewison, the maker of The Thomas Crown Affair, Fiddler on the Roof and Rollerball.
